Vaccines are one of the most emotional topics in child health. For some parents, vaccination is simply another routine milestone. For others, particularly those who believe their child's development changed around the time of vaccination, it can become one of the most difficult decisions they ever face.
Too often, the conversation becomes polarised. You're either expected to accept every vaccine without question or you're labelled "anti-vaccine" for asking questions. Neither approach helps parents.
My aim isn't to tell you whether you should or shouldn't vaccinate your child. That is a deeply personal decision that should take into account your child's health, family circumstances, your tolerance for risk and discussions with qualified healthcare professionals. Instead, I want to explain how vaccines work, where the evidence is strong, where there are genuine uncertainties, and why supporting your child's overall health remains important regardless of the decision you make.
Understanding the Different Types of Vaccines
Not all vaccines are the same. The table below breaks down how different vaccines are made and how they work inside the body. Note, live attenuated vaccines are very different to other types of vaccines because they can actually cause infection. That may be why the MMR vaccine is linked to notable development changes.

One common misconception is that vaccines contain mercury, this is not actually true.
The 6-in-1 vaccine, MenB and pneumococcal vaccine contains inactivated or purified components. It does not contain live viruses that can replicate in your child's body. What makes these vaccines a concern is that they contain aluminium salts, which are used as adjuvants to strengthen the immune response. This aluminium can become dangerous because the a child's blood brain barrier does not fully develop until 4 months old. This increases the risk of heavy metal accumulation increasing vulnerability to other distressors like mould and other virus'.
The MMR vaccine is different. It contains live attenuated (weakened) measles, mumps and rubella viruses. These viruses are modified so they can stimulate immunity while being much less likely to cause disease in healthy individuals. Because they are live attenuated viruses, they have the potential to replicate and attack vulnerable nervous systems. In rare cases, as with the original diseases, this can cause brain swelling and neuroinflammation that can precede neurodivergent symptoms.
The Impact of Vaccines on Infectious Disease
There is no doubt, vaccination has played a major role in reducing the burden of many infectious diseases over the past century. Vaccines have helped reduce both the number of infections and the number of severe complications in many countries. One of the most notable public health achievements was the global eradication of smallpox in 1980. Diseases such as polio, diphtheria, Hib meningitis, and measles have also declined dramatically in countries with high vaccination coverage, although some continue to circulate in other parts of the world and outbreaks can still occur where immunity falls. It is also important to contextualise the data, vaccination has been used alongside improved sanitation, nutrition, antibiotics, intensive care, and public health surveillance to improve survival from infectious diseases.
Why Are Parents Concerned?
One concern I frequently hear from parents is that their child appeared to regress developmentally shortly after vaccination. The exact words I hear was ‘my child was never the same again’ or ‘we never got them back’.
Now it is possible the vaccine simply overlapped with a normal regression window, or the vaccine was the straw that broke the camels back of a stressed and dysregulated nervous system, but in other cases, vaccines can cause new symptoms to develop as a direct result of the brain inflammation, and when left unaddressed, these symptoms persist.
Transparency and Trust
One of the biggest issues I personally have with vaccines is the monopoly certain manufacturers have on the market.

Given many of the vaccines currently included in the standard protocol, have less than 1,000 cases per year, the question to you is, can you trust the agencies and companies telling you every child in the country needs these vaccines, when the evidence does not strongly support that.

Government compensation
May people do not know this but it is possible to claim compensation as a result of vaccine damage in the UK. The UK Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS) exists to provide financial support in the rare event that someone is found to have become severely disabled as a result of certain vaccinations. It is a government-run scheme administered by the NHS Business Services Authority and covers a range of routine childhood vaccines, including MMR, MenB, 6-in-1, rotavirus, the covid vaccine and others. If a claim is successful, a tax-free one-off payment of £120,000 may be awarded. To qualify, the claimant must show, on the balance of probabilities, that the vaccine caused the disability and that the disability is assessed as at least 60% under government criteria. The payment is not compensation for negligence and does not prevent someone from pursuing a separate legal claim if appropriate. Parents can apply online or by post through the government's Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme, where medical records are reviewed by independent medical assessors before a decision is made. The Bottom Line
Parents deserve accurate information, compassionate support and the opportunity to ask difficult questions without fear of being judged.
Vaccines have contributed to major reductions in many serious infectious diseases, and like all medical interventions they also carry the possibility of side effects, most of which are mild and temporary, with serious adverse events considered uncommon.
The goal should not be to make decisions based on fear, whether fear of disease or fear of vaccines, but to understand the evidence, consider your own child's circumstances, and work with trusted healthcare professionals to make the decision that is right for your family.
